17/01/2010: Under 15 A 17-10 Sutton & Epsom RFC
Chipstead RFC Under 15`s A - 17 Sutton & Epsom RFC Under 15`s A -10
Thankfully a break in the weather meant that this league game could go ahead. Conditions were good but the ground was soft and taking a long stud.
It’s been a long time since we got together and it showed, we started off all huff and puff with the testosterone levels almost at fever pitch, enough talk of the coaches, what about the players!
For once I had a full squad to pick from and it showed. The first 10 minutes was played at 110% and we knew we couldn’t keep that going. Just as Chipstead started to get things going and wok some phases and control things when Tom H was pole axed with a high tackle.
This was the incident that galvanized us, and after some pressure we had a penalty and Dominic went over to settle our nerves. We knew that S&E would come back at us and where that would be, true to form they did exactly that and went over for a try. We were making thing shard for ourselves when Dominic chipped through and Fred scored under the posts. James F slotted the kick over and at half time I was concerned as to whether we’d done enough.
The second half saw S&E come at us continually attacking our line, our defence stood firm, and we eventually cleared our lines. With the wind in our sails and with some good attacking play we took the game to S&E, from a 25 metre scrum we made a break and with some sublime play we drew three players and released Sam P to go over in the corner and with that game over.
This doesn’t give credit to the whole team and squad effort today, I asked and got it in spades, well done boys.
This game did show us that there is a lot more work for us to do, but what was pleasing was the heart, soul and sheer determination of all the players that pulled us through in the end.
Thanks for all of the support today, especially the Under 17’s who came over for the 2nd half, it was very much appreciated.
Jay
