21/02/2010: Under 11s 5-3 Old Whitgiftians
Chipstead Under 9’s-- 3 V Chipstead Under 11’s --5
As some of the Under 11’s were playing away at Old Witgiftians today Fin asked if the remaining could play the under 9’s after our training session.
It was agreed to 9 a side and non contested scrums and lineouts.
The under 9’s fielded our strongest team and we felt it would be a good test of teamwork against older, stronger boys who had played rugby for longer.
It ended up being a tight match with some very good rugby being played by both sides. The under 11’s took a quick lead of their first attempt and they ran straight through the 9’s ( I think the 9’s were a little nervous at the start) it was then decided to handicap the 11’s and make them pass 3 times before they could score.
This evened things up a little and the 9’s got more confident in there own abilities and started tackling with more commitment. Scores were traded between the teams with Tommy E and Connor O’R scoring for the 11’s and the 9’s hitting back with 2 scores from Cameron and a really well worked move of the back of the scrum from Jac.
In the end the 11’s strength proved just too much and Callum powered over for a great try.
The score ended up 5-3 in favour of the 11’s but the 9’s can hold their heads up high as they played really well together as a team and supported each other. The tackling from the 9’s was fierce and the teamwork in forcing the 11’s into touch on several occasions was fantastic (remember 9’s that forcing the opposition into touch is free ball for us) .
What we can learn from the under 11’s – driving over in the rucks and picking the quick ball will always give an advantage. This was the only thing that let us down in the first few plays of the game – The 11’s were much quicker to the loose ball. If we can perfect this – then the festivals should be very interesting.
A big thank you to Fin and the 11’s for coming over and playing.
Neil
