07/03/2010: Under 16 A 27-17 Dorking (L)
A good result, with the bonus point, put us back on track, back playing the rugby we like to play.
The first half was very even, with Chipstead opening the score with a penalty in front of the posts and followed up after a sustained period of pressure, with a try from Bushy who took a quick tap from 5 metres out (having moved the Dorking linesman from off the ball) and dived under the defending forwards for the touch down.
Dorking came back into it and worked their way into the Chipstead half resulting in a penalty kick and a converted try under the posts. The teams turned round at 10-8 to Dorking.
Playing with the strong wind in the second half, the Chips backs started to get the better of their counterparts and made inroads into the defence. Opportunities to score started to come but again Chips wanted to come inside when the space was outside. This happened at least 3 times before, again from a quick tap 5 metres out, the ball found it`s way to Dupey who spurned the chance to pass but fortunately was strong enough (or heavy enough?) to stay on his feet and force his way over the line. This went uncoverted but Chips had the confidence to keep playing and, perhaps hindered by a couple of enforced changes due to injury, Dorking started to buckle.
Another try followed this time from a scrum. Alex Jelley took the pass at pace and off loaded to Hicksy who accelerated into the gap for a classic line break to score under the posts, which he duly converted. Still Chips kept up the pressure and the bonus point try came directly from this pressure when Dorking tried to kick clear from their own in goal area which was charged down and Josh Burrill dropped on for the vital score.
Chips then seemed to relax and with due credit, Dorking came back at them strongly, resulting in a try from another 5 metre penalty.
This weeks learning points are very similar to last week, whilst good passes were made, mainly before the tackle this week, too many times players brought the ball inside when there was space and players with pace outside. Look sideways, not just forwards.
The big one though is attack the penalty. At every penalty the vast majority of players watched Dorking tap and run at us without making any attempt to close the space down. This resulted in at least one try. It is something you all learnt from an early age, all go up as one. Something we will work on again.
Well done, good win.
