So what is mini Rugby about? Under 7s and Under 8s play mini Tag rugby (non contact) with the emphasis, at Chipstead RFC, on fun and learning the basics of the game, as well as encouraging the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. We also run an U6s group who train alongside our U7s.
The Chipstead Under 7s covers a broad range of ages (generally from 5-7; but sometimes younger). Training at the Meads takes place on Sunday during the season from 10:00 to 11:30 for U6s and younger and until 12pm for the U7s. On occasion we visit other clubs (or they visit us) and we also take part in a number of Festivals throughout the year. The Chipstead Website [www.chipstead.co.uk] provides details of fixtures so you can see if we are at home or away on any particular Sunday.
The RFU has guidelines on age restrictions when it comes to Festivals and competitive matches; If your child was age 6 on midnight 31 August before the start of the season then they are officially an U7 (if they turn 7 on the 1st September, they are still an U7). If your child was 5 on that date, but then turns six during the season then they can play in festivals (at the discretion of the organisers) from the date of their 6th birthday.
We try to ensure that there is a training session at the Meads on Festival days for the players who aren`t chosen to play in Festivals, or cannot because of age restrictions.
There is an annual membership of £120 (which also covers player insurance); what we tend to encourage is that the boys and girls (and parents) come for a couple of weeks to see if they like the game, the set up etc and then if they do we ask them to sign up; the money can be paid by monthly Direct Debit.
Please remember layers, hat and gloves (the Meads can be very windy) and a non-fizzy drink. Longer term if you stay with us your child will need a Chipstead shirt, rugby boots and a basic mouth guard (its non-contact, but accidents can happen!). As this is a winter sport, with the inevitable rain, the ground can be muddy so a lightweight waterproof would also be advisable. There is a shop at the Clubhouse for kit.
Hopefully the above helps, but please do not hesitate to get in touch (see details at the top) if you`d like to find out more
Regards
The Coaching team
